Smartshares Investment
Access a wide selection of domestic and global Exchange Traded Funds (ETF) with Smartshares! Smartshares is a member of the New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX), creating the first ETF back in 1996. NZX’s Smartshares allows you to invest across the main classes of cash, bonds, shares, and property with ease. You can build up a portfolio of securities that:
- Tracks the performance of a specific index, like the NZ Top 10 Fund (TNZ) comprising the 10 largest listed companies on the NZX.
- Outperform a specific index, like the Global Bond Fund which aims to outperform the Barclays Global Aggregate Index.
You can easily buy and sell Smartshares, as the funds themselves are listed on NZX like individual shares. This allows investors to purchase them through regulated stockbrokers and financial advisers, in addition to buying them directly.
Why choose Smartshares NZ?
As a member of the NZX Group, Smartshares is supervised by the New Zealand Public Trust government organisation, making it safe to invest in. However, it’s important to note that unlike Simplicity, Smartshares is not an investment service provider. It operates only to issue ETFs for the NZX, as well as sell overseas ETFs.
Smartshares ETFs are sorted into six categories:
SmartLARGE
These list the biggest companies in NZ and offshore.
- Smartshares NZ Top 50 (FNZ) - This has an annual fund fee of 0.50% and invests in the 50 largest companies in NZ.
- Smartshares NZ Top 10 (TNZ) - This has an annual fund fee of 0.60%, but only invests in the 10 largest NZ companies.
- AUS Top 20 (OZY) - This fund invests in the 20 largest listed Australian companies with an annual fund fee of 0.60%.
- US 500 (USF) - This fund invests in the American S&P 500 Index, which includes companies like Apple and Coca-Cola. It has an annual fund fee of 0.34%.
- EUROPE (EUF) - This fund invests in Europe’s largest companies, both in the EU and all over the UK. It has a 0.55% annual fund fee.
- ASIA PACIFIC (APA) - This invests in Asia and Australia’s largest companies, with an annual fund fee of 0.55%.
- EMERGING MARKETS (EMF) - With an annual fund fee of 0.59%, this fund invests in companies within emerging markets like China, Brazil, Taiwan, and South Africa.
- TOTAL WORLD (TWF) - The TWF invests in large American and global companies, with an annual fund fee of 0.56%.
- US LARGE VALUE (USV) - This is a fund that invests in the largest American companies, with an annual fund fee of 0.51%.
- US LARGE GROWTH (USG) - This fund invests primarily in growth shares in the US, with an annual fund fee of 0.51% as well.
SmartMEDIUM
This invests in medium-sized companies
- NZ MID CAP (MDZ) - This fund invests in mid-sized companies in NZ, with an annual fund fee of 0.60%.
- AUS MID CAP (MZY) - This invests in Australian mid-sized companies, with an annual fee fund of 0.75%.
- US MID CAP (USM) - This fund invests in mid-sized American companies, with an annual fee fund of 0.51%.
SmartSMALL
This invests in small American companies listed on the stock exchange.
- US SMALL CAP (USS) - A fund that invests in small US companies and has an annual fund fee of 0.51%.
SmartINCOME
This fund is for those looking for safe debt by investing in companies with good financial health both in NZ and globally.
- NZ BOND (NZB) - With an annual fund fee of 0.54%, this fund invests in NZ-issued bonds, whether corporate or government, gaining a fixed percentage of interest.
- NZ CASH (NZC) - Invests in term bank deposits in NZ, with an annual fund fee of 0.33%.
- GLOBAL BOND (GBF) - This fund invests in both corporate and government bonds equally, and has an annual fund fee of 0.54%.
SMARTDIVIDEND
Try this fund if you’re interested in investing in profitable companies that pay the highest dividends in the Australian and NZ market. It’s especially useful if you’re into companies that prioritise return dividends over growth.
- AUS DIVIDEND (ASD) - Invest in Australia’s top 50 dividend-paying companies, with an annual fund fee of 0.54%.
- NZ DIVIDEND (DIV) - Invest in NZ’s top 25 dividend-paying companies, with an annual fund fee of 0.54%.
SMARTSECTOR
These funds are for those interested in investing in Australian and New Zealand commercial properties.
- AUS PROPERTY (ASP) - Invest in Australian companies that deal with commercial real estate. The annual fund fee is 0.54%.
