Did you recently buy a new phone and want internet access as soon as possible? Or did you lose your connection and want to re-establish it? Either way, we're here to show you how to connect phone to broadband, whether you're using an iPhone or Android device, while also providing some troubleshooting tips to common problems you may encounter.

The Short Answer

Here's how to connect to mobile broadband via wireless or cellular:

For Wi-Fi, go to your phone's settings, select Wi-Fi/Wireless, turn it on, select your network's name, and enter the password if needed.

For cellular, turn it on from the Cellular/Mobile Network, and it should work if you have an active SIM with a data plan.

What Is Broadband?

Broadband is a high-capacity technology that transmits large amounts of data simultaneously without letting them interrupt each other, unlike dial-up, which is the older and widely outdated option.

A broadband connection also allows you to access the internet at incomparably faster speeds than dial-up without too much more.

How a Broadband Connection Works

Unlike dial-up, where the internet connection cable is shared with the landline phone, broadband uses a dedicated cable that establishes a connection between your modem and the internet service provider.

Types of Broadband Internet

Here are the five most common types of broadband internet:

  1. Digital Subscriber Line (DSL): DSL is one of the oldest forms of broadband, relying on your home phone line to transmit data but using different frequencies to avoid interruptions and a modem to increase bandwidth.
  2. Cable Internet: Cable internet is similar to DSL but relies on coaxial cables commonly used to run TVs. They also require a modem to maintain high speeds.
  3. Wireless: Wireless broadband delivers internet via signals and doesn't require a cable to connect. Examples include Wi-Fi, cellular network, and satellite internet.
  4. Fibre Optic: Fibre is the top-of-the-line broadband service that transmits data as light pulses through ultra-thin glass strands. We recommend you upgrade to fibre broadband for faster and more reliable internet access.

There are many ways to connect your mobile phone to broadband, but the most common are wireless and cellular data.

A Wi-Fi connection allows you to access the internet directly from the router via radio waves. It's the most convenient option for phones because of their mobility and lack of an Ethernet cable.

Cellular data is a service by a phone carrier to provide internet via cellular networks. It allows you to access the internet wherever there's cellular coverage but is typically costlier and has more data caps.

How to Connect Your Phone to a Wi-Fi Network

To connect to a wireless network, follow these instructions depending on your phone type:

On iPhone

  1. Open the settings menu.
  2. Go to Wi-Fi and switch it on.
  3. Once your phone shows you nearby networks, choose the one you want.
  4. Enter the password if required.
  5. If successful, you should see a blue check left of the connection name and a Wi-Fi symbol on top.

On Android

  1. Open the settings menu.
  2. Go to the networks menu. It should be labelled Internet, Wi-Fi, WLAN, Networks, or something similar.
  3. Make sure Wi-Fi is on and wait for it to scan.
  4. Choose your network and enter the password if required.
  5. If successful, it should display "Connected" under the network's name.

Note that most phones automatically save Wi-Fi credentials, so even if you leave the router's range and come back, it should connect automatically.

Troubleshooting Common Wi-Fi Issues

If you're facing issues accessing broadband after following the steps above, follow these quick fixes to check for issues:

  • Ensure you're close enough to the router.
  • Ensure the network is working by checking it on other devices.
  • Double check you've entered the correct password. You can also display the letters while entering them.
  • If the network is hidden, manually enter its name (SSID) and password.
  • Restart the router or your phone.
  • If all else fails, call your internet service provider.

How to Connect Your Phone to a Cellular Network

Once you have an active SIM card in your phone, follow these steps to connect to cellular data:

On iPhone

  1. Open the settings menu.
  2. Go to Cellular.
  3. Turn on cellular data. If you have two SIM cards, choose your preferred one.

On Android

  1. Open the settings menu.
  2. Go to the cellular data menu. It should be called Mobile Network, Cellular Data, or something similar.
  3. Turn mobile data on.

Alternatively, you may find it on Android behind an "Internet" button, where you'll need to select your carrier and turn on data from there.

Troubleshooting Common Cellular Data Issues

Mobile data issues are rare since it's available as long as you have cellular reception and any form of data plan. If you can't access mobile broadband despite this, check if there's an internet outage in your area or contact your providers.

Enhancing Your Mobile Broadband

If you're facing issues with your mobile broadband, whether it's a weak signal, frequent disconnections, or other issues, here are some tips to get the most out of your internet connection.

For Wi-Fi users, we recommend you place your router in a central location so that it can reach all devices but also limit the number of devices on it (as it's a shared bandwidth). You can also upgrade your router if it's old. You can also use signal boosters and range extenders to enhance your router's reach.

On data, try to be mindful of your usage and avoid wasting too much bandwidth and monitor your usage regularly and watch out for internet-heavy apps, such as video players. Many popular apps also have data saver modes to help you with this.

The Bottom Line

Fortunately, connecting your phone to broadband is quite easy, and the speed and reliability of common wireless methods have improved tremendously over the years.

If you follow the steps above, you should be connected in no time. And if you're facing issues and our troubleshooting tips didn't resolve them, we recommend you contact your internet service provider or phone carrier.

I was a little hesitant to stay on the call when I first picked up but I’m glad I stayed until I did. Josua Legavai was the lovely lady taking care of me. She was so friendly, clear and helpful. She helped me understand everything I needed to and explained everything with great detail. I am still young and learning and have just moved into a new home with my son so I’m grateful she was able to help me today.

I'm so happy I asked Glimp for help, to find a service provider that suits our family's budget, without losing quality and unlimited data on both our mobile phones and broadband. Mele Falahola is a Comparison Specialist from Glimp and she was amazing from the beginning. Mele located the right service provider for our needs that will save us money!, fulfil our usage and more! compared to what we were using. My wife and I even asked for a comparison on our electricity bill. Mele responded immediately once she saw our monthly bills and compared it to another provider that not only do not required a contract to stick too (like the mobile and broadband provider Mele recommended) but their price per kWh was so much better! Which is why we changed that also. Thank you Mele and Glimp for your help. We can now look forward to our Christmas holiday in the Cook Islands from what we can now save. :-)
