Jetstar is offering more than 50,000 discounted airfares this Christmas! For as low as $22, Kiwis can travel to five domestic and nine trans-Tasman destinations. The six-day sale started on 8 December to 13 December 2021. Club Jetstar members had early access to the sale from midday of 7 December.

As more and more destinations are now easing quarantine restrictions for fully vaccinated Kiwis, it’s now easier to travel in and out of New Zealand. From the research conducted by Jetstar, they also found that 59% of the respondents have been putting off their travel plans for the past 12 months.

Do you need to get vaccinated to travel?

For international flights, Jetstar requires customers aged 12 years and older to be fully vaccinated with a TGA-approved or recognised vaccine. All terms and conditions apply unless you have an exemption to show once boarding.

When returning to New Zealand, you don’t have to go into a managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) facility. Starting in January 2022, fully vaccinated Kiwis can begin travelling to NZ with the revised 3-step plan by the government:

  1. Starting on 16 January 2022, fully vaccinated New Zealand citizens and eligible travellers from Australia can enter NZ without going into MIQ. This is provided that they’ve only been within Australia or New Zealand for the past 14 days.
  2. Starting on 13 February 2022, fully vaccinated New Zealand citizens and eligible travellers from all but very high-risk countries can enter NZ without going into MIQ.
  3. Planned to start on 30 April 2022, fully vaccinated foreign nationals can enter NZ without going into MIQ.

Nonetheless, you still need to go through mandatory self-isolation and must submit:

  • A negative pre-departure test
  • Proof of being fully vaccinated
  • A passenger declaration about travel history
  • A day 0/1 test on arrival
  • A requirement to self-isolate for 7 days, and
  • A final negative test before entering the community

Is it a guarantee that you’ll travel by next year?

It’s difficult to tell. Earlier this year, Jetstar had no choice but to cancel scheduled domestic and international routes to Australia and the Cook Islands because of the Delta variant. This was despite being included in the bubble with New Zealand for a short period.

While the threat of the Omicron variant is imminent, the World Health Organization says that existing vaccines should still work against the variant. This is a positive sign that your flights may not be cancelled amidst the threat.

Of course, this isn’t a guarantee as more specific studies may reveal findings of the efficacy of the vaccine against the Omicron variant.

What should you prepare during your trip?

Aside from preparing necessities like clothes, sunscreen, and toiletries, make sure you have a hotel room booked, especially if you don’t have a place to stay with your family and friends. You may also want to have a travel insurance policy, covering for things like lost baggage, cancellations, accidents, and more.
