Chorus — one of NZ’s biggest broadband providers — has recently launched their HyperFibre broadband plans in places where most Kiwis live and work. It’s estimated to connect almost three million New Zealanders across the country. With its hyperfast speeds, it’s expected to be the gamechanger when it comes to connectivity for homes and businesses.

Before joining the hype for HyperFibre and getting one for yourself, do you really know what it is? How does it differ from other fibre types? Can you actually utilise its speeds? Here’s all you need to know about HyperFibre.

What is HyperFibre?

HyperFibre is an internet with speeds ranging from 2-8Gbps, depending on the broadband plan. Aside from lightning-fast speeds, it boasts ultra-smooth, high capacity, and low-latency connection. As of writing, it’s the most advanced broadband type available in New Zealand.

The minimum speed of HyperFibre is 2,000Mbps or 2Gbps. In comparison, this is 20x faster than the standard fibre broadband with speeds of 100Mbps. What’s more, it’s not even the fastest it can get! Some providers offer HyperFibre broadband plans with speeds of 4-8Gbps in some designated places.

For context, you can download a 15GB game update for only 30 seconds with 4Gbps speeds. When you download the same update using an internet with 100Mbps speeds, it will take you around 20-25 minutes!

HyperFibre vs Gigabit Fibre vs Standard Fibre

HyperFibre can be twice as fast as gigabit fibre with speeds as fast as 1Gbps. Compared to standard fibre, it can be 20X as fast. Take a look at a more comprehensive comparison of fibre broadband plans available in NZ.

How can I take advantage of HyperFibre?

There are several ways to take advantage of HyperFibre. While they’re more popular among large businesses that handle huge amounts of data, some homes and small businesses also get HyperFibre broadband plans to ensure speedy, lag-less, and reliable connection. Here’s how you can take advantage of HyperFibre.

Always connect through the ethernet cable

Whenever possible, always connect using an ethernet cable. Wired connection only suffers small connection drops between 50-150Mbps, compared to wireless connection which drops to 100-250Mbps. This is because there’s a cable that directly connects your device to the router, easing the flow of the internet.

Upgrade to a high-tech router

Most devices will connect using Wi-Fi. If you want your wireless connection to be as fast as your wired connection, upgrade to a high-tech router. When you have a poor router, it may not distribute the signals well, reducing your wireless broadband speeds even more.

Get mesh routers and wi-fi extenders

Physical disturbances like walls, cupboards, and other electronic devices can reduce the speeds of your connection significantly. It’s not easy to tear down these disturbances. Luckily, you can get mesh routers and wi-fi extenders. These can prevent dead zones throughout your home or office, letting you take advantage of HyperFibre to its full speeds.

Which providers offer HyperFibre?

As more and more  New Zealanders need a faster internet, several broadband providers now offer HyperFibre. It’s important to note, however, that they may only have specific areas where this is available. See the providers that offer this broadband type.

Chorus

It’s no surprise that Chorus is here on this list. Being one of New Zealand’s most trusted broadband providers, they offer HyperFibre broadband with speeds of up to 4Gbps for only $200 per month. This is more than plenty for all online activities most Kiwis do.

Additionally, they’re testing their 8Gbps HyperFibre offering in some parts of Auckland. Sooner, more and more cities and towns across NZ can take advantage of this HyperFibre speed.

MyRepublic

MyRepublic is popular among Kiwis for its high-speed fibre broadband speeds. Their HyperFibre broadband offerings cost only $149 per month for 2Gbps and $179 per month for 4Gbps. Both are available in 12- month contracts.

Orcon

Orcon is one of the pioneers when it comes to standard fibre in New Zealand, and the same is true for HyperFibre. They offer Fibre 4000 for $195 per month, with an additional $199 set up fee in a 12-month contract.
