Types of Southern Cross Health Insurance plans NZ - Policies, Coverage

HealthEssentials

This plan is designed to help Kiwis with their everyday healthcare costs. It doesn’t cover things like surgical or specialist consultations, but it can help with daily expenses like GP and dental. Claims for these can be made straight away, and Kiwis can claim up to $1,250 a year. This day-to-day plan also covers glasses, contact lenses, dietitians/nutritionists, massage therapists and other consultations up to their policy limits.

Wellbeing Starter

This is Southern Cross’ entry-level health insurance plan, primarily dealing with concerns like cancer and cardiac surgery. It also includes cover for cancer care, diagnostic imaging, recovery, and consultations within 6 months of eligible treatments. Optional cover under this policy includes their Cancer Assist; an one-off payment over and above your insurance plan should you be diagnosed with cancer, and Critical Illness; an add-on that provides extra financial support  for other illnesses like stroke or heart attack.

Wellbeing One

Wellbeing One is a broad plan for surgical and healthcare needs, providing coverage for cancer care, unlimited surgical procedures, consultations, and tests and recovery. It’s even possible to reduce your premiums by applying for excess ranging from $500 to $4000.

Wellbeing One plans provide options to add modules to further tailor your cover. This plan has the option to add the following:

  • Keeping Well Module - Cover for flu vaccinations, GP visits and hearing, vision and dental consultations, and prescriptions.
  • Body Care Module - This is cover for allied and natural healthcare which includes remedial massage therapy consultations, acupunctures, osteopaths, chiropractors, and more.

Wellbeing Two

This is their more comprehensive healthcare plan, which includes a wider range of coverage for consultations and surgical procedures. The primary difference is the number of modules they can add-on. In the case of Wellbeing Two, these are:

  • Keeping Well Module - Cover for flu vaccinations, GP visits and hearing, vision and dental consultations, and prescriptions.
  • Body Care Module - This is cover for allied and natural healthcare which includes remedial massage therapy consultations, acupunctures, osteopaths, chiropractors, and more.
  • Day-to-day Module - This cover includes physiotherapy, doctor visits, prescriptions, vaccinations, and annual health check.
  • Vision and Dental Module - This module is tailored towards dental and optical care which includes dental consultations, glasses/lenses, and optometrists.

UltraCare

This is Southern Cross’ premium surgical and healthcare plan providing the highest level of cover. This includes general services covered in the previous plans with the addition of any qualified pre-existing conditions being covered after three years. Under this policy, it’s possible for holders to choose their own specialists and even upgrade their plan to include Ultracare’s optional Vision and Dental module, which includes glasses/lenses.
