We are thrilled to announce that we have launched our latest utility comparison tool – Power Comparison. There are existing power comparison tools out there, Powerswitch run by ConsumerNZ and the privately run switchme, but we are bringing you something refreshingly different to help you trim down those pesky power bills!
Working with the latest information from the Electricity Authority ( who run the whatsmynumber campaign ) we are estimating users’ power requirments, not only by how many people are in a property but also by where they live in New Zealand.
What we do differently to both Powerswitch and switchme, is we project your annual power consumption over a 12 month period and give you a break down of your monthly costs.
On the results page where we show you the most suitable power plans, we have a nifty feature in which we show you your projected monthly costs on a graph. You know yourself that you use more power in winter due to the drop in temperature so we take this into account when projecting your consumption along with your location to estimate your power consumption with the latest information from the Electricity Authority ( who run the whatsmynumber campaign ).
We thought it would be cool to give you a feature that could help you budget for your power bills over the year. It gives you an intelligently estimated guide of how you bills will look in any month over the next 12 months.
Now lets dive in to why we ask you the questions we ask you on the power comparison search form.
Power Comparison Search Form
In order to project your annual power consumption over the next few months we first need to know if you have your power bill to hand.
We have two ways you can compare power prices on glimp. The most accurate way to compare power prices is to use a recent power bill. On the bill, there will be your monthly usage ( in kWh ) and something called an ICP number. ICP stands for Installation Control Point, and this is a unique identifier for your electricity meter.
With both your monthly power consumption and ICP number simply click on the “Yes” box when we ask you if you have your power bill to hand.
Don’t worry if you don’t have your power bill, we have another option where we intelligently estimate your power consumption. Simply click the “No” box when we ask you if you have your power bill.
We also need to know your address so we can make sure we show the correct power prices for the power companies in your area. It is important to know your address to find out what the climate is like in your neck of the woods. If you live in Queenstown you will use more electricity heating your home in winter than say someone in Kaitaia and that’s exactly what our service does for you!
Once we know where you live, we need to know if you use electricity or reticulated gas ( fixed piped gas ) to heat your home, heat your water and what you use to cook. Depending on what answers you give to these 3 options we estimate what your power consumption could look like over the year.
If you selected “No“ to having your bill on you, we will ask you how many people you have in your house. The more people that live in your house means more people playing on computers or taking showers which unfortunately means more power is consumed each month!
If you selected “Yes” to having your bill on you, you will get the option to enter in your electricity consumption ( and gas if you have it! ). Using your actual power usage we get a more accurate insight in to your power consumption.
Power Consumption Projection
What we do differently to other power comparison tools like Powerswitch and switchme is project your power consumption based on the information you have given us, over the next 12 months. Neither Powerswitch or switchme give you both a monthly break down of each month’s costs and a total annual cost.
By giving you all this information it gives you all you need to make the best decision when choosing a power company that best suits your needs.
