If you're moving to New Zealand for work, university, or planning a long vacation in the North Island, you should consider how much you'll pay for rent and living expenses throughout your stay.

Rental costs in New Zealand are computed on a weekly basis. Rates are determined by the location, size of the property, agreement with your landlord, and any unanticipated occurrences (such as a pandemic) that may have a major impact on your contract. 

There are two types of rental agreements in NZ. You can choose either a fixed-term or periodic term agreement.

A fixed-term tenancy is commonly for short to medium-term contracts. Periodic tenancy agreements, on the other hand, last until either the tenant or the landlord gives the notice to terminate the contract.

Before signing a tenancy agreement, make sure you understand all the provisions that you and your landlord have agreed to, such as basic and shared utilities, which are usually paid for by your landlord. This includes:

  • Electricity and gas, and refilling gas bottles
  • Telephone and internet
  • Water fees, if the supplier charges by use

As long as there are separate reading metres for basic services like water, electricity, and internet (in addition to the gas used), the tenant will be responsible for his own bills.

Your landlord is in charge of water and wastewater charges, common facilities, providing a gas cylinder, and paying any gas bottle hire expenses.

What type of insurance should a tenant get?

As a tenant, you are responsible for insuring your belongings and protecting them from risk through contents insurance, while your landlord is responsible for ensuring their rental property against any damage.

How much deposit do I need to pay for a rental in New Zealand?

Once you move into the property, your landlord may ask for a bond to cover unpaid rent, property damage, or tenancy-related disputes.

Tenants who have been responsible for taking care of the property, paid rent in full, and paid any outstanding balances should be entitled to a refund when the tenancy expires.

How much is rent in New Zealand?

Rental payments vary depending on the place and dwelling type you’re leasing but it can go between $250 to $1000 per week. According to the UK's Cost of Rent Index Study, New Zealand ranks 13th in the world for the most expensive rentals, with Kiwis spending 33.12% of their monthly salary on rent.
