Many people rely on their annual service to maintain the condition of their car. The problem with this is one servicing appointment isn’t going to be enough to maintain your vehicle.

It’s like going to your dentist once a year and thinking that’s all you need to do to keep your teeth healthy.

You still need to perform routine tasks such as daily brushing and flossing. Otherwise your next dental appointment is going to hurt your wallet. Your car is really no different!

Extend the life of your vehicle and reduce the chances of a mechanical problem with our top 10 DIY maintenance tasks.

If an accident does happen, make sure you protect yourself with car insurance. We’ll also show you how to compare car insurance NZ wide and find the best quotes.

1. Check tire pressure

Incorrect tire pressure can lead to problems such as poor braking, car instability, less gas mileage, and many problems with the tire itself. Tires are expensive and replacing them is one burden you don’t want.

2. Check your oil and maintain the correct level

The purpose of motor oil is to lubricate all the moving parts of your vehicle so they don’t grind and cause wear and tear.

This is why checking you have enough oil is important for the health of your car. If it is a low level, make sure you top up the oil immediately.

3. Wash your car’s interior and exterior

Maintain the value of your car by washing the interior and exterior parts of your vehicle. Dust and grime can cause the interior materials to fade and devalue your car.

Dirt and bird droppings can further damage the coating of your car if left unwashed.

4. Avoid driving recklessly

Avoid revving your car and braking too hard. Driving recklessly can put a lot of strain on your vehicle’s internal components which can lead to problems in the long run.

Accelerate appropriately and avoid slamming your brakes where possible.

5. Change your air filter

Every car manufacturer has their own recommended time frame for switching the air filter.

Some manufacturers recommend a new air filter after 30,000 kilometres, while others may say 50,000 kilometres.

A dirty air filter can directly affect your car’s performance so it’s important to make note of this.

6. Buy floor mats

Keep the carpet on your car clean by purchasing floor mats. Floor mats help prevent the interior carpet from getting wet and dirty from muddy shoes. This will also make it a lot easier to clean your car!

7. Park in the Shade

UV rays from the sun can do a lot of damage to your car’s paint job and interior compartments.

Where possible, park in the shade and avoid leaving your car out in the sun.

Purchasing a window shade to shield your car’s interior can also help block out UV rays from the sun.

8. Follow any manufacturer instructions

If a manufacturer makes any recommendations regarding car maintenance, follow them!

For example, they may recommend you come in during the first six months for a routine service.

Following manufacturer-related requests will help maintain the condition of your car.

9. If a problem occurs, talk to a mechanic

If any mechanical problem with your car presents itself, go see a mechanic. The problem won’t magically disappear, and it is always best practice to gain professional advice.

10. Buy car insurance

Is your vehicle still under warranty? Car insurance provides you with a layer of protection from all kind of accidents.

Whether you get into a car accident or have a mechanical failure, there is a good chance car insurance can reimburse you. Compare car insurance quotes with glimp and find the best deal possible.
